i.skåte - mixed media on paper

From attempted drawn loops, - a reminder of my first grade exercise book - to rampantly scribbled pencil hatchings, charcoal traces and characters, the paper field is covered by a left hander's illegible inscriptions and tangles of lines. The specific meaning of words disolves into stuttered, scattered and abstract transcriptions, expressive gesturing, and rages of crossing out. At the same time, the visual chatter is muted by a tender interlacing of coloration with the non-color white. Consonants, vowels, lexical items, meaning and syntax, - reminding of Roland Barthes' lure of importance - are not only rendered into the physicality of movement but also transformed into asemics, a universal language, embedded in the unconscious mind. The wet-in-wet technique and applied layers induce an illusion of depth, an ambivalence between disclosure and concealment. The landscape of figure and ground, form and emptiness, the dimension of time and space, and the sound of noise and silence merge into the present moment.

i.skåte is a reminder of juissance, an enjoyment, of both, a realistic as well as transcendent state of freedom and of the paper's vulnarability. Digested sources and inspirations derive from the movements and works of Dada, Surrealists' propagated écriture automatique, Chinese, Japanese and Zen calligraphy, Abstract Expressionism, Cy Twombly, Roland Barthes and Hélène Cixous' écriture feminine.
